Ceramic Cremation Urns
What Is a Raku Urn?
Raku translates as "happy accident" from the Japanese language. It is an ancient method of incorporating the four elements of water, fire, earth, and air into pottery making. The clay used to make the pot represents earth and water. The heat in the kiln is, of course, fire. After a short time in the oven, the piece is removed and plunged into a container filled with combustible material, like straw or paper. Once that material ignites, the container is closed to intensify the smoky atmosphere and introduce the air element. This thermal shock changes the glaze colors and often produces a pleasing crackled effect.
